In the last 30 years there have been many changes in the organisation of general practice. There has been a decline in smaller practices and a movement to multidisciplinary group practices often working from purpose built health centres. General practitioners (GPs) now work in teams and some of the work previously always carried out by doctors is now undertaken by nurses or other professionals allied to medicine.
